Recently Shure came out with its Motiv line of microphones that makes audio recording easier and accessible to everyone.
When you look at the Shure MV88 iPhone Microphone, you will see that they allow you to adjust all settings of this microphone on your iPhone or iPad app. I will start this Shure MV88 Review by talking about the app and what you can do when you pair it with MV88.
Let us talk about the Shure MV88 microphone itself. It is tiny in size and easy to travel with. However, this little mic has a built-in nice carrying case, a foam windscreen, and a monitoring adapter cable.
In addition to that, You can easily connect this mic to the lightning port and rotate the head in any direction you want. The MV88 is made of mostly metal and solid plastic. The audio quality of this microphone is just excellent. After using this mic, I feel that this microphone excels when recording live events.
The Shure MV88’s notable features include:
- Frequency response:20Hz to 20KHz
- Adjustable gain:0 to +32dB (controlled in the app)
- Sound Pressure Level (SPL):120 dB max
- 5 DSP preset modes speech, singing, flat, acoustic instrument, loud
- Item Weight 0.07 Kilograms
There’s a ShurePlus MOTIV app to control your microphone from your iPhone. However, This app doesn’t require you to have any Shure microphone, meaning that you can use their app with other microphones.
When you change any settings within the ShurePlus Motiv iOS app, it will be saved to the MV88 microphone. In addition, they allow you to record with different audio/video recording apps.
The ShurePlus Motiv iOS App also works well with other Motiv lines of products like (MV51, MV5, MVi & MVL).In general, the ShurePlus Motiv iOS App is very easy to use and has a simple, straightforward recording process.
Shure MV88 is an awesome portable mic with the Lightning connector for iOS devices. However, you can face little trouble connecting this mic when you use iPhone or iPad case. For that reason, you need to remove the case from your iPhone or iPad to connect this mic properly.
The capsule of this mic is visible in its fine-mesh metallic grille body. However, this mic has two capsules to adjust stereo field and mono recordings.
Shure provides a mall zip-up case and a very short 3.5mm cable with this MV88 Model so that you can use them to monitor the sound quality while recording.
The ShurePlus Motiv iOS App allow headphone monitoring to record the audio perfectly, which works great on older Lightning iPhones like the 6S.
The only problem is that Apple decided to remove the headphone jack from the iPhone 7, and They will never bring it back, so you can’t monitor the audio easily on the latest iPhones.
Shure released the MV88 before that happened, so I hope they will work on the update to include a headphone jack, But there’s no official word till today.
The MSRP for the MV88 is $149.Lastly, Shure offers the optional but recommended AMV88-FUR Rycote Windjammer for MV88 for more effectively blocking wind outdoors.
